Windows 7 Hibernation File Disable

In Windows 7, as in previous versions, there is the ability to have your machine go into Hibernation or power save mode. Whether this is really a valuable option is really up to the decision of each user. As for me, it’s more of a pain than a benefit. The pain part of it for me is that when your machine goes into hibernation mode it creates a cache file the size of everything in your RAM. So, if you have 4 GB of RAM installed on your machine, it creates a cache file that size. This can take up valuable disk space. Here’s how you can disable and delete that cache file.

Open up the command prompt, you need to run it as the administrator. Type powercfg -h on and press Enter.  Done.

Windows 7 Set Default Email Application

So with Windows 7 Microsoft changed the way you set your default applications. So here is how change your default email application
Here is what you do:

Click on the start thing and open up the control panel.
Select Default Programs and then Set program access and computer defaults.
Click on Custom and under choose your app as the default email program.

Set Lotus Notes to Basic Mode

If your Lotus Notes is hanging or causing other errors try putting it into basic mode.  Look below:

Explanation:

This allows customers to install the 8.0.2 Notes Standard client, but launch the Basic client based on a Notes.ini parameter UseBasicNotes=1.

 

This notes.ini parameter will allow external programs that launch notes, such as a MailTo: URL, or launching an NSF file directly, to launch notes in Basic mode if UseBasicNotes=1 is set in the Notes.ini.

 

This will allow customers to rollout a single package, but define which users will launch Basic vs Standard via this notes.ini parameter.  For example, if a machine does not meet the hardware requirements of 8.0.2 Standard, but does for Basic, this will allow the client to launch in Basic mode until hardware has been upgraded,

 

By default, this parameter is not in the notes.ini and will launch the Standard client if it is omitted or set to 0.

 

Notes.ini parameters can be pushed out via administrative policy, which make it easier for customers to centrally control this feature.

None, although you can specify this setting in the NOTES.INI Settings tab of the Configuration Settings document in the Domino Directory.

Can’t Install Adobe Creative Suite 3 (CS3)

So this past week I’ve been trying to install Adobe Illustrator on a computer. Every time I would try the progress bar would stop about 40% and the CD would stop spinning.  No errors, no warnings, nothing…just a dead stop.  Despite my own best efforts in searching for solutions on line and within the Adobe support forums, nothing was working.  I attempted to contact Adobe support to see if they could shed some light on the issue I was having.  Surely they’ve had other people with the same issue and could at least tell me what the issue might be related to.

If you’ve reached this page looking for the solution, here’s what I did to get the installation to work.  Uninstall all programs by Adobe that you might have installed on the computer: Reader, Flash Player, Acrobat and any shared components.  Then restart the computer and try installing again.  There are some other references that I found that said to try copying the installation files from the install CD to the hard drive of the computer then running the setup.exe.  This didn’t work for me and would error out when I tried to copy the files over.  So, remove all Adobe stuff then restart then try installing.

Any how, I jumped on the Adobe tech support chat.  Here’s how it went:

Tech Support Online Chat

Today I had a pointless chat with the online help folks of a hosting company. I wanted to find out why my connection to a MySQL database using MySQL Administrator wasn’t working. As you can see I would’ve been better off just trying to figure it out on my own.

Dan: uhhh, what?
Support_Person: It is connection string that creates backup of database
Support_Person: But I suggest you to use special software MyqlYOG
Support_Person: It is easy client that allows you to make backups and restore databases from that backups
Dan: so I can’t use MySQL Administrator?
Support_Person: Generally, you can use any tool, but unfortunately, we do not provide support for third party software, like MySQL Administrator
Dan: well it has always worked in the past and now it says that was an error connecting. so, is there any other way to make a back-up other than a dump?
Support_Person: No. it is the only way
Dan: I’ve tried to use phpmyadmin and then restore the file and it says that there is an error in the file
Support_Person: What is the size of your file?
Dan: about 5 and a half mb
Support_Person: That’s why you’ve got that error, phpmyadmin allows you to upload files less then 2Mb
Support_Person: So I suggest you to use MyqlYOG, it does not have size limitation
Dan: yeah but it costs money for the full version
Dan: ok here is the error I see when I try using MySQL Administrator: Access denied; you need the SHOW DATABASES privilege for this operation
Dan: can you give me those privileges?
Support_Person: No, unfortunately this option is protected on our system due to security reasons
Dan: so basically I cannot make a backup or restore my database…
Dan: this is unaccetpable
Support_Person: You can, but via another tools, it seems your MySQL Administrator tool are not able to make a backup without this option
Dan: but this tool costs money…when in the past the free tool from MySql has always worked
Dan: why now are you forcing me to pay for something that was working in the past?
Support_Person: It seems the size of your backups were less then 2 Mb
Dan: wrong
Dan: I need this to happen today
Dan: can I talk with your manager?
Dan: can we allow the privlege for just a few minutes so I can do a backup?
Support_Person: Unfortunately, it is not possible
Dan: thats not an option
Dan: you’re telling me that something you offered before was possible and now it has changed
Dan: I need this to happen
Support_Person: I apologize, it is a sql command that is protected on our server
Dan: its a simple SHOW DATABASES setting
Dan: can you ask your manager for me?
Support_Person: Unfortunately, it is not simple settings, we are using shared hosting structure, so this command will allow you to have access to all databases of all our clients
Support_Person: Unfortunately, it is not possible
Dan: well then the way you have it set up with usernames isn’t correctly configured
Dan: if you had it setup by usernames…I should be able to see all of my databases
Dan: and not everyone else’s
Support_Person: I apologize, but unfortunately, we can not enable this command for your domain due to security reasons
Dan: unacceptable
Dan: please consider changing your Mysql security structure as it is incorrectly configured
Support_Person: Dan, I apologize, but our structure can not be changed by your request
Dan: please be advised that it is flawed
